Teaching of English writing in junior high school is and indispensable part of English teaching and an important way to reflect students? output ability.Text cohesion is one of the most significant factors affecting the quality of compositions.And text cohesion theory has attracted the attention of many linguists at home and abroad.According to English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education revised in 2011 by the Ministry of Education,language skills are divided into five levels,and three to five levels are the basic requirements of junior high school.In terms of writing,level 5 requires students to be able to independently draft short articles,short messages,and so on,and modify them under the guidance of teachers;and to be able to use common conjunctions to express order and logical relations.However,it is found that the theory of text cohesion has not been widely appropriately applied in teaching of English writing in junior high school by consulting references and investigations at school.Many English teachers in junior high school confine their teaching in writing to the sentence structure and neglect students? text awareness,which leads to many text cohesion errors in students? compositions to some extent.Under the guidance of the theory of text cohesion,the method of questionnaire,interview and sample analysis are applied to discover the problems of text cohesion among junior high school students.Through the analysis of results,it is found that there are mainly grammatical cohesion errors and conjunction errors in junior high school students? compositions,which are mainly due to the negative transfer of mother tongue,neglect of input of text cohesion knowledge by teachers and students? lack of understanding and mastery of text cohesion knowledge.In the view of problems found in investigations,some teaching strategies are proposed,such as contrasting English and Chinese cohesive devices to overcome the negative transfer of mother tongue,strengthening specific exercise of various cohesive devices and skillfully using teaching assessment.It is hoped that it will be helpful for English teachers in junior high school to cultivate students? awareness of text cohesion in English writing,make proper use of text cohesion and effectively improve the level of English writing.
