| Engagement system under Appraisal Theory has been adopted as the theoretical basis to do the research,and it is combined with corpus-based approach.Thirty news reports are chosen from Chinese and American mainstream newspapers respectively to build two corpora,and engagement resources used in the news reports are annotated and analyzed in order to investigate what kind of image of China has been built.The engagement resources in two corpora are extracted and labeled by using UAM Corpus Tool.Finally,the number and proportion of various engagement resources in Chinese and American news corpora can be derived.What kind of Chinese image has been built can be concluded by further analysis of the proportion of different engagement resources and specific examples in the corpora,which means the reason and effect of using engagement resources will be explained.The numbers and proportions of engagement resources used in the two corpora indicate that although the number of different resources varies from time to time,it shows similarities in occupation ratio.It demonstrates that the mainstream news reports from China and the United States show different or even opposite attitudes towards the Belt and Road Initiative through the application of various engagement resources.Combined with the various data display and comparison methods provided by UAM Corpus Tool,the following conclusions were reached.The American side expressed other countries' vigilance against China and made negative assessments of the effect of the Belt and Road Initiative.It also questions the true purpose of the initiative,so the image of China has become very insincere,unreliable and irresponsible.While Chinese news reports show the fact that other countries have benefited a lot by joining the initiative.They may face debt problem,but its advantages outweigh disadvantages in the long run.Therefore,China has been shaped as a country of selfless,reliable,and helpful.The Belt and Road Initiative is a major measure for China to implement all-round opening up under new historical conditions and to promote an important platform for mutual benefit.It's of great significance to study news reports related to the Belt and Road Initiative because of its major influence.In addition,mass media plays an important role in maintaining social order by propagating views that are consistent with prevailing ones.Therefore,how these two countries perceive the Belt and Road Initiative can be concluded through the analysis of their news reports,and a further conclusion of what kind of image of China has been built can be drawn.In theory,the combination of engagement systems and corpus tool analysis is innovative to some extent.Corpus annotation is characterized by its accuracy and fast speed,and the results can be visually presented in different ways.The integrity of engagement resources is ensured to the greatest extent through the automatic and manual annotation of various engagement resources in the corpora.In practical,readers will take a critical way to perceive news reported by other countries and will not be influenced easily by public opinions after knowing the selective and subjective features of news discourses. |
