| This thesis is a report on a translation project. The original text of the translation project is selected from Huangmei Opera: the Quintessence of Chinese Culture Reader, which comprehensively introduces the origin and development of Huangmei Opera. In the process of translation, the author finds that the source text belongs to the popular science text, but there are many culture-loaded words. It is necessary to construct the best context for the target readers to understand the meaning of the source text. From the perspective of Relevance Theory, the author explores the strategies of amplification, substitution, ellipsis and compensation in translating Huangmei Opera Readers into English. As there are many culture-loaded words in the original text that need further explanations, the author uses additional translation or compensation to translate them.In this way,the best relevance can be constructed so that the target language readers can achieve the maximum cognitive effect with the least cognitive effort.Once the information of the original text does not matter, the author adopts an elliptical translation method. In order to create the best context for the target language readers, the author employs familiar cultural examples to the target language readers, that is,substitution translation methods. This proves that under the guidance of Relevance Theory, the best relevance in cognitive context can be constructed by means of amplification, substitution, ellipsis and compensation, and thus the effective translation of Huangmei Opera Readers can be achieved. This translation project aims to promote and spread the culture of Huangmei Opera, encourage an increasing number of readers in the world to know about Huangmei Opera as well as its development, and contribute to the spread and exchange of traditional Chinese opera culture. |
