The revised National English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School highlights key English disciplinary competencies.Key English disciplinary competency is the hot issue which is increasingly concerned by educators.Reading teaching plays an important role in cultivating students' key competencies.Currently,domestic research of key competencies is in the rising stage.Many scholars combine key competencies with English teaching.However,researches of combining key competencies with English reading activities are not many.At the same time,the case study focuses on one subject constantly and thoroughly and the researcher can make the in-depth research in some time.Therefore,under this background,the author makes a case study of one excellent teacher for three months in order to analyze how this teacher designs his reading activities and whether these activities are conformed to key English disciplinary competencies or not.The subject of this research is the excellent English teacher from Liaoning Province Shiyan High School.The teacher cultivates many outstanding students in his own way and he also gains some honors.He has abundant and precious experience of reading teaching.This research is supposed to explore three questions below:1.What are the pre-reading,while-reading and post-reading activities based on key competencies?2.What are the teacher's concepts of designing reading activities?3.What are the effects of English reading activities on the cultivation ofstudents' key competencies?Questionnaire,interview and classroom observations are used as research instruments in this study.According to the research,there are three conclusions:1.These reading activities can be generally divided into audio visual,oral communication and writing.2.These reading activities are designed based on key English disciplinary competencies.3.Through the reading activities,students' language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability are developed greatly.Through the research of the excellent English teacher's reading activities,the significance is to give some inspirations of designing activities to novice teachers.
