A Report On The Translation Practice Of The First Part Of Dreiser

DREISER,a biography by American writer W.A.Swanberg,records the life of Theodore Dreiser,a modern American novelist.There are six parts in the book,and the translator is responsible for the first part,which is mainly about Theodore Dreiser’s teens.Theodore Dreiser is known as “a pioneer of modern American fiction”,and his works are close to life and highlight realism.By translating this biography,the translator will allow Chinese readers to better understand his works and the realism in his works.British translation theorist George Steiner proposed fourfold translation motion theory,namely “trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”.In these four translation approaches,translator’s subjectivity can be fully reflected.The translator can exert the translator’s subjectivity from the aspects of bilingual operation ability,cross-cultural consciousness,artistic reconstruction,aesthetic standards,hence improving the readability of translation.In the translation report on DREISER,the translator will lay out the reflections of the translator’s subjectivity in the four approaches of translation,and how the translator’s subjectivity can be exerted in the translation approaches through examples ranging from narrative perspective to the words with the bearing of culture.Finally,the translator will try to summarize that with the guidance of the theory,by choosing appropriate strategies in literary translation,there can be a big improvement on the readability of literary translation works.There are five parts in the translation report.The first part is the introduction to the translation,which includes the background and significance of the translation,and the organization of the report.The second part is three translation processes: pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.The third part is theoretical framework for the case study,where it is the introduction of fourfold translation motion theory and translator’s subjectivity.The fourth part is case study including the translation of narrative perspectives and the words with the bearing of culture.This part is the focus of the translation report.The translator will,under the guidance of fourfold translation motion theory(“trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”),exert translator’s subjectivity from bilingual operation ability,cross-cultural consciousness,artistic reconstruction,aesthetic standards.The fifth part is a conclusion on the translation practice: the experience and limitations,and other improvements.
