Report On Interpreting For Private Enterprises Management And Development Seminar Based On Relevance Theory

With the development of globalization,interpretation is attracting more and more attention.Based on the theory of sense and the viewpoint that translation is a kind of communication,this report will take relevance theory as the theoretic basis.In August of 2018,the author participated in the Seminar on Private Enterprises Management and Development for Developing Countries,2018,and was in charge of part of the consecutive interpreting work.This project was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China,co-organized by Hunan International Business Vocational College and Hunan Modern Logistics College,and participated by 69 members from 19 countries.Most of the trainees in this seminar were from African,South-east Asian,or Middle Asian countries.Their English level varied a lot that some of them could only carry out simple communication.In such a situation,there emerged a lot of problems and there were more challenges for interpreters.The main ideas of relevance theory are the principle of cognition and the principle of communication.The former believes that human cognition tends to be geared to the maximization of relevance and the latter suggests that every act of ostensive communication communicates a presumption of its own optimal relevance.Being applied to interpreting practices,the theory can help to explain the interpreting process: taking into consideration the cognition of the speaker and the audience and the context at the moment,the interpreter adopts appropriate strategies to make sure that the audience are capable to get the meaning of the utterance correctly and make the communication succeed even under the circumstance of language barriers and the need for an interpreter.Based on the ostensive-inference mode and the key roles of cognition and context,various problems that appeared during the seminar will be analyzed and coping strategies will be introduced,thus enabling the author and readers to have a deeper and better understanding of relevance theory and apply it into future practices.
