A Report On The Translation Of King's Dragon(Excerpts)

The report is based on the translation of the prologue and first two chapters of King's Dragon,an epic fantasy written by American writer Kate Elliott.Under the guidance of the contextual theory and explicitation strategy,the report has focused on knotty issues the translator has confronted with during the translation,the corresponding solutions and reflections on the contextual theory and explicitation strategy after the translation.The translation report highlights and analyzes words,sentences tinted with religious,cultural and medieval glamour,and dialogues depicting characters,which are hard to be translated in the translation task.During the translation,the translator realizes that by using the explicitation strategy properly and translating under the guidance of the contextual theory,she can not only improve the readability and acceptance of the translated version,but also recreate the characters vividly,making the translation more graphic and easier to understand.After the further analysis,the translator divides translation difficulties into three classes: explicitation of implicit information,cultural information and characters' emotions and attitudes.The explicitation of implicit information,including logical relations and polysemous words,can be achieved by adding conjunctions,restructuring,repetition,using specific words and changing figures of speech.The explicitation of cultural information can be solved by adding footnotes and translating illustratively.To recreate the characters and their attitudes and emotions,addition,amplification and shift of tone are quite helpful.This report is comprised of four parts.The task description includes an introduction to the translation task,the significance of the translation and the structure of the report.The process description consists of preparations before translation,process while translating,and proofreading after translation.The case study briefly introduces the contextual theory and the explicitation strategy,and illustrates selected examples from three aspects: explicitation of implicit information,cultural information and characters' attitudes and emotions.The conclusion consists of two parts.The first part summarizes the translation skills the writer of the report has employed and the reflections on the translation.The second part concludes the limitations of the report.The process of the translation practice of King's Dragon(Excerpts)indicates that translation not only tests the translator's bilingual ability,but also her knowledge about translation theories.What's more,to translate a fantasy novel faithfully and expressively,the translator needs to employ the explicitation strategy properly,resort to the contextual theory to guide her translation and have imagination.
