This paper is a translation report which is based on the legal English(or language of the law)translation research. It is well known by us that legal English is quite different from other translation material and it always expresses the concept of legal science and deals with the lawsuits and non-lawsuits in this term.Analyzing from the angle of subject, legal English is a mixture of legal science and English linguistics,so its characters should be concluded from these two subjects, such as high accuracy and solemnity. With the fast development of society, the legal English is formed not only by one factor, however, its current situation results from many elements, including social political system, religious culture and other aspects. As a result, when we translate the legal English,we should be careful enough to sustain its text features. In these cases, fully considering the speciality of my translation material,I choose to use the Functional Equivalence Theory(put forward by Nida,a famous American translation theorist)to direct my translation report. Many people know that Nida is a religious believer whose translation career is developed with the research of Bible translation.Due to this factor, his translation theories, such as functional equivalence theory is shaped on the basis of Bible translation. In this theory,Nida thinks a translator should pursue after equivalence rather than identify between the source language and target language. When translating, what we do is nothing but to reproduce the message that is in accordance with the original and target languages. To achieve this job, translators should grasp many skills, such as the grammar and lexical skills to suit different situations.Furthermore, functional equivalence theory does not emphasize the form equivalence invariably but lays great emphasis on the function equivalence between the two languages. In other words, this theory hopes to reach the fact that no matter who you are(original language receptor or target language receptor),these receptors react similarly when they read, which means functional equivalence. With the guide of the theory,I mainly use three translation methods(free translation, transliteration, omission)to achieve this translation practice. To bespecific, free translation pays all attention to the internal meaning of the source language instead of translating word for word while the aim of transliteration is opposite as its target language is based on the pronunciation of the original language content, such as the translation of names of various types.Compared with the above-mentioned two methods, omission sometimes is a more better choice of translation to avoid the phenomenon of giving unnecessary details to keep brief.Through these three methods,I gradually realize the equivalence(word equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence)by illustrating concrete translation examples. To conclude, this translation report is a task practice with the help of theory.Personally,I manage to grasp the essence of Nida's functional equivalence theory to instruct the whole process of my translation report and show how this theory helps me demonstrate it is quite applicable in the translation practice of legal English.Furthermore, this translation practice can give guidance to those related researchers.
