With the development of the time,literary classics have been updated for a long time.Jane Austen is one of the most famous female writers in her time,and she is known as “Shakespeare in prose”.Jane Austen has a group of loyal readers all over the world,who are sometimes called “Janeites”.These readers carry on the personalized interpretation to the text,which makes the classic works spread for a long time.Austen’s works were not praised when they came out.Only when critics studied the works repeatedly,did they finally demonstrate the literary value of the classic works,which made Austen famous.Emma is a representative work of Jane Austen.Although it is not as popular as Pride and Prejudice,it has a deep understanding of the world.Novels are artistic forms under the care of narrative theory,and Emma embodies superb narrative art.Foreign scholars have studied the narrative strategy and perspective of Emma,forming a relatively complete structure framework.The research purpose of this paper is to sort out the criticism history of Chinese and Western scholars on Jane Austen’s Emma,so as to comment on the narrative art of Emma.This paper will specifically discuss the narrative structure,narrator,narrative mode,narrative time and space and other important issues of Emma in order to supplement the theoretical research system of Emma in China and contribute to the research.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the main body of this paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the research status of Emma by Jane Austen,and the development of narratology theory and text writing framework.The second chapter mainly introduces the narrative features of Emma,analyzes the narrative structure of the work,and probes into the common narrative techniques;analyzes the narrative discourse of the work,and probes into the dual voice of the narrator and the characters caused by the free indirect quotation;analyzes the narrative mode of the work,and probes into the charm of irony application;analyzes the narrative time and space,narrative rhythm of the work to explore the tension of the works caused by the change of time and space rhythm.The third chapter mainly introduces the contribution of Austen’s narrative art in Emma to the development of the novel,and discusses the status and influence of Austen’s narrative art.Based on the above research and analysis,the conclusion points out that in Emma,Jane Austen skillfully uses various narrative techniques,narrative strategies and so on,which highlights the artistry of narrative and makes her work a unique one in the history of British literature.
