Vocabulary,which is an important part of language,plays an irreplaceable role in information transfer.It is one of three elements of language.English vocabulary is vital but difficult for many English learners.Both teachers and students are in face of many difficulties in English teaching and learning.As a learning theory,constructivism learning theory is the further development and promotion of behaviorism and cognitive theory.The theory was originally proposed by Swiss psychologist J.Piaget in 1960 s,which emphasizes that students construct knowledge actively in learning.It has been recognized by more and more scholars and applied to different English teaching practices,and achieved some results.This paper is based on the constructivism learning theory,taking the Kunming Jiaozishan Experimental Middle School as an example,does some questionnaire surveys and interviews related to constructivism learning theory.The necessity of application of constructivism learning theory in vocabulary learning and teaching is discussed.Two classes conducted are shown the differences between traditional and constructivism learning strategies and advantages of English vocabulary teaching guided by constructivism learning theory in rural areas.It proposes some strategies to improve the efficiency of vocabulary teaching.This paper mainly draws the following conclusions:Firstly,there are many drawbacks in English vocabulary learning in rural areas.Lacking of learning motivation,students show little interests in English.The traditional learning strategies are dominant and the learning efficiency is low.Teachers are short of the knowledge of constructivism learning theory,and the teaching methods are single.Therefore,it is necessary to apply the theory to English vocabulary teaching and learning.Secondly,the research shows that the method based on constructivism learning theory is more suitable for learning and mastering English vocabulary than the traditional methods and concepts.Students participate in the study of vocabulary consciously and actively,which is good for vocabulary mastering and application.Thirdly,teachers should learn more knowledge and experience of constructivism learning theory.According to the physical and mental characteristics of students,teachers should dig out the potential of students fully,create an enjoyable learning environment actively,and guide students to construct their own vocabulary knowledge based on their prior knowledge.Different teaching methods should be used to cultivate students' learning ability so as to improve the efficiency of English vocabulary teaching and learning.
