A Transitivity Study Of The Ecological Discourses In The New Era Of Ecological Civilization

The 19^th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out that the reform of constructing eco-civilization is required to be accelerated and beautiful China is supposed to be constructed.Human makes great contributions to the construction of eco-civilization so that future generations can also benefit from it.Scholars make linguistic researches from the perspective of ecology.Stibbe?2015?puts forward that ecological discourses can utilize linguistic theories which are applicable to it,such as Systemic Functional Grammar and Cognitive Linguistics.Therefore,this study analyzes the ecological discourses selected from The New Era of Ecological Civilization with the assistance of transitivity system so that the ecological view embodied in ecological discourses can be uncovered.This study selects ecological discourses from The New Era of Ecological Civilization.Taking Halliday?s transitivity system as the theoretical framework,this study tries to discuss three research questions by integrating quantitative approach and qualitative approach together.Three research questions of this study are as follows:?i?What is the distribution of the transitivity processes,participants and circumstances in the ecological discourses of The New Era of Ecological Civilization??ii?What is the realization of the transitivity processes,participants and circumstances in the ecological discourses of The New Era of Ecological Civilization??iii?What is the ecological view embodied in the ecological discourses in The New Era of Ecological Civilization?How does transitivity system construct the ecological view?As the research tool,UAM Corpus Tool provides significant assistance for overall analysis on distribution and realization of transitivity elements in The New Era of Ecological Civilization.It is figured out that,1)in The New Era of Ecological Civilization,the distribution of participants is higher than processes which occur more frequently than circumstances.In terms of participant,material participants and relational participants occur more frequently.In terms of process,material process and relational process occur more frequently.In terms of circumstance,location and manner occur more frequently;2)in The New Era of Ecological Civilization,high-frequency words or phrases in the realization of transitivity process represent the ecological theme of the discourses.It shows measures taken by human,intimate relationship between ecology and human,human?s attitude towards ecology,human?s verbal and physiological behavior and matters existed in ecological environment.High-frequency words or phrases in the realization of participant are items directly involved in material process,relational process,mental process,verbal process,behavioral process and existential process.And high-frequency words or phrases in the realization of circumstance represent time,place,manner taken by human;3)ecological views embodied in the ecological discourses of The New Era of Ecological Civilization are Valuing Living,Wellbeing,Now and the Future as well as Environmental Limits.And based on the analysis of transitivity distribution and realization,it can be figured out that transitivity process,participant and circumstance co-work to construct the ecological view.Although transitivity process and participant play more significant role,the role of circumstance cannot be ignored.This study probes into ecological view embodied in ecological discourses of The New Era of Ecological Civilization with the assistance of transitivity system,aiming to reveal ecological view embodied in the discourses which has vivid ecological theme.This study verifies whether transitivity analysis can help to uncover the ecological view embodied in ecological discourses and how ecological discourses and ecological view are connected through transitivity.
