This report originates from the proofreading internship at the Chinese Copy Preparation and Proofreading Unit(Chinese CPPU)of the United Nations Headquarters from July 8th to October 11 th,2019.Proofreading has been done on the Chinese translation of the documents in the field of international law during the internship.Documents proofread include:“Yearbook of the International Law Commission”(2011)(Volume I;Volume II,Part Two and Part Three),“Summaries of Judgments,Advisory Opinions and Orders of the International Court of Justice”(2013 – 2017),“United Nations Juridical Yearbook”(2014),etc.,all of which are difficult and complex.Following the procedure of individual proofreading, peer review and supervisor's confirmation, the author explored the characteristics of the UN legal documents and ways to improve their Chinese translation, especially the translation of long sentences. The author found that,by employing sight-interpreting skills, the readability of the translation of long sentences can be elevated. In this light, the report elaborates on the author's internship at the Chinese CPPU,with a focus on how the application of sight-interpreting skills can improve translation quality.By doing so,this report offers an interpreting-based solution to quality enhancement of translation. The author also hopes to offer useful information for MTI postgraduates who want to take an internship at the UN.Readers can have an overview of the UN proofreading intern's daily work through reading this report.
