Thomas Hardy is one of the most important British writers in the 19 th century.And Jude the Obscure as his last novel has distinct spatial narrative characteristics.Therefore,this paper tries to make a further study on the types of spatial narrative,ideological metaphor and artistic strategies of this novel.In this way,Hardy's perfect control over the space makes this novel show more tension,which not only expands its theme,but also makes the novel forms an organic whole in the spatial narrative.The introduction part mainly combs Hardy and his work of Jude the Obscure,and summarizes its research status at home and abroad,as well as the development of spatial narratology.Chapter one mainly discusses about the types of spatial narrative in Jude the Obscure,and reflects in the aspect of topographical level,social level and power level.The spatial narrative in topographical level shows in macro-topographical level and micro-topographical aspects.The social level mainly reflects the relationship of different social groups and social space.The second chapter analyzes Hardy's ideological metaphor which based on the types of spatial narrative,his attitude towards the change of traditional culture,the contradiction between socialgroups and people's resistance to power is revealed in this way.The third chapter analyzes the spatial narrative strategies of the juxtaposition of spatial narrative,the structure of spatial narrative,and the images of spatial narrative.The conclusion part indicates that Hardy constructs a hybrid and diverse space,and uses those spatial techniques to strengthens the spatiality of this novel.In a word,this paper by using spatial narrative theory to analyze Jude the Obscure,not only the Victorian period of England is vividly presented,but also connects spaces with characters more closely.In this way,readers can have a new perspective about characters and the rich contents of this novel.
