The translation material of this report is excerpted from Ken Hyland and Pejman Habibie's new book-Novice Writers and Scholarly Publication.Nominalization is one of the significant features of academic texts.The use of nominalization can increase the density of sentences and concentrate information to show the simplicity,preciseness and objectivity of the text.However,because of the different linguistic styles between English and Chinese,it is difficult for translators to properly understand and translate nominalization.Nominalization is an important form of ideational grammatical metaphor.Under the guidance of the notions of ideational grammatical metaphor,the author discusses the translation strategies of nominalization,so as to promote the study of translation strategies of nominalization in academic texts.Based on the theory of Halliday's grammatical metaphors classification,this report takes the cases of naminalizations from translation material and classifies them into verbal nominalizations and adjective nominalizations.Then it analyses the translation strategies corresponding to different types of nominalization,which can be divided into two aspects: “demetaphorization”and “metaphorization”,including conversion,division,literal translation,amplification and so on.After applying these translation strategies,the translation is more objective and clear,and easier for readers to understand and received.Through this practical report,the author has a deeper understanding of the ideational grammatical metaphor and nominalization.It is hoped that this translation report can provide theoretical and practical reference for the future academic discourse translation concerning nominalization.
