Language testing is one of the most important fields in language learning and research,and as one of the most effective and useful types,the multiple-choice items are important both in large-scale tests and small-scale exams.As one of the most important parts of TEM-4(Test for English Majors-Grade Four),multiple-choice vocabulary items inevitably draw plenty of attention from lots of teachers and students.This thesis aims to examine the task difficulty and influencing factors in multiplechoice vocabulary items in TEM-4 from 2016 to 2018.It proves the task difficulty and the impact of influencing factors,the word frequency in COCA,word difficulty in CEFR,options including synonyms or not and word accessibility.The findings show that most of testing contents of multiple-choice vocabulary items in new TEM-4 are consistent with syllabus of TEM-4.Based on the correlation and regression analyses,the means of FI indices and FI indices in majority are in the rational range,which affirms the feasibility of multiple-choice vocabulary items in new TEM-4.Additionally,word frequency in COCA,options including synonyms or not and the level of word accessibility are significant to task difficulty of multiple-choice vocabulary items,while no significant correlation is found between word difficulty and task difficulty.The R Square of all factors is 53 percent,interpreting the variance satisfactorily.All in all,the conclusion is that the multiple-choice vocabulary items in new TEM-4 are reasonable and the four factors in question have different levels of impact on task difficulty of the multiple-choice vocabulary items.In the thesis,the multiple-choice vocabulary items in new TEM-4 are analyzed carefully.The results of the research can provide a reference for surveying validity and reliability of TEM-4 after 2016 and investigating the multiple-choice task difficulty.Certainly,this research gives some advice for teachers,students and test designers.
