China Men is a masterpiece of Kingston,a Chinese American writer, which tells about the stories of four generations of the male members in Kingston's family who have worked and lived in the United States.Since its publication,China Men has won great success in the American literary world. As we can see,China Men is a highly hybrid text in aspects of language, culture and literariness, which reflects the conflicts and fusion between Chinese and western cultures.Such hybrid phenomena pose great challenges to translators.A study on translating hybridity can help translators gain an in-depth understanding of the author's cultural and political appeals and thus sheds some light on translating Chinese American literature. Therefore, based on relevant theories about hybridity, this thesis aims to discuss how translators deal with the hybrid phenomena when translating them back into Chinese and explore the resulting effects and possible reasons for adopted translation strategies. After a detailed comparison between the original text and three Chinese versions of China Men,this thesis discusses the translating of linguistic hybridity, cultural hybridity and literary hybridity. It is found that in terms of language, all the three translators mainly adopt transliteration and transliteration with annotation strategies at the lexical level and the domestication strategy at the syntactic level. However,at the cultural level,Zhang Shi mainly adopts the foreignization translation strategy and seldom adds any annotations except obvious cultural appropriation. And Xiao Suozhang usually adopts the foreignization strategy as well, but sometimes he will also adopt the domestication strategy when translating typical Chinese cultural images. As for Li Meihua, she mainly chooses the domestication strategy. At the literary level, both Zhang Shi and Xiao Suozhang adopt the full translation strategy.By contrast,Li Meihua chooses the abridged translation strategy. In a nutshell, some losses of the functions and features of hybridity in the source text seem to be inevitable during the translation process because of linguistic differences, translators' failure to grasp the author's specific intention for employing hybridity and patrons' translation brief. Therefore, translators should pay more attention to the author's intention of adopting such hybrid phenomenon during the translation process and try to reproduce the hybrid characteristics in the target text.
