The language service industry, including interpreting, has been developing rapidly in recent years, but there is still a lack of quality interpreters in the Chinese market.Quality interpreting requires extraordinary abilities of listening,information-processing,attention splitting and expressing, just to name a few.Prior to this process, sufficient preparation in a right way could significantly improve the performance of consecutive interpreting(hereinafter referred to as “CI”).It is a fact that pre-task preparation is vital not only for the interpreter, but also the organizer and the speaker, which is,however, often neglected. The case in this report is based on a medical CI for Foshan Hospital of TCM.The author was responsible for interpreting the academic exchanges in terms of foot and ankle diseases between Chinese doctors and German professor Makus Walther. This event aimed to promote in-depth cooperation in the department of foot and ankle between the two countries. This report elaborates how the author prepared, conducted and reviewed this medicine-related interpreting.Based on Daniel Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Model, the author analyzes the importance of advance preparation for this practice. This report intends to study the influences of pre-task preparation made by both sides, including the interpreter and the client,on the quality of CI output. The author hopes to improve her preparation skills and offer effective preparation guidance and coping strategies to other interpreters. This report mainly consists of five parts, including theoretical framework, task description, process description, case analysis and conclusion.First, the author elaborates on the rationale of the report. The second part is the theoretical framework, including an introduction to the Interpretation Comprehension Model and former studies of pre-task preparation. The third part introduces the whole process of the interpreting from three aspects:pre-task preparation, problems occurred during the preparation phase, and on-site interpreting. And the fourth part serves as the post-task analysis from there perspectives. The last part is conclusion, consisting of major findings, limitations and suggestions.Based on her practice, the author summarizes the obstacles to comprehension caused by the three aspects of language knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge, and analysis ability. The author believes that interpreters should expand their language knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge fromseveral aspects, and improve their analytical skills to meliorate the quality of interpretation. In addition, not only language service providers need to make adequate pre-task preparations, clients need to cooperate with interpreters to ensure adequate communication and provide as detailed information as possible.Only the cooperation of these two can guarantee the communication purpose of the interpretation activities. |
