Construction Of Spirituality

As one of the representatives of the “Color-fields painting”,Mark Rothko' s works are unique because of their strong spirituality.This thesis aims to discuss about the spirituality in those paintings made by Mark Rothko,by examining the special period of Rothko from 1941 to 1948,as from a perspective of artist.Chapter One mainly sorts out the art sequence before 1941 of Mark Rothko,and gives the factors which affecting the artist's concept in considering about his own miserable life.In chapter two,the author tries to analyze what is the most important thing that Mark Rothko concerned about at work,and what did he want the audience to feel from his paintings.Chapter three is the keystone and the innovation of this paper,Rothko had been working on the same mode of image over and over again since 1949,the author tries to discuss how did it come about by analyzing the composition of those paintings,and then discuss how did him make the spirituality come true step by step with stating his control of both lighting and spacing.The spirituality of Rothko' s art manifests as a kind of tragic eternity and the desire for inner communication.The construction of spirituality in Rothko' s paintings,comes from the artist not sticking to any existing art genre,but constantly looking inside and asking himself,also comes from the total control of the artist over the whole art process from creation to exhibition.
