Long and complex sentences are a common linguistic phenomenon in English. With the deepening of the communication among people from China and foreign countries,English long and complex sentences used in translation practice are getting more and more frequent, which results in great difficulties for translators. How to understand the long and complex sentences has always been the key point to achieve desired translation quality. In this thesis, the translator selects the first part of Good Habits,Bad Habits written by Wendy Wood as the translation text.By explaining how our brains respond to the external environment,Wendy Wood analyzes the process of habit formation by her clear and incisive work and offers several practical suggestions for readers. This book offers real hope to people who want to make positive changes in life.Extensive long and complex sentences used in this book greatly increases the difficulty of translation. To better convey the real meaning of the original text and give consideration to Chinese expression, the translation will be guided by Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory. This report makes an analysis of the long and complex sentences in Good Habits and Bad Habits, focusing on the difficulties encountered during translation and the different methods and skills used to specific language expressions. This report firstly introduces the relevant information of Good Habits,Bad Habits, including a brief introduction to the author and the book, and analyzes its stylistic features.Next, the report mainly introduces the translation process, including three parts:pre-task preparation, translation process, and post-task control.Pre-task preparation consists of reading translation texts, choosing translation tools and methods, and searching parallel texts.Meanwhile, the translator selects some typical cases in the translated text and uses specific translation methods to solve the problems encountered in translation.During translation, the translator applies translation theory and skills to specific translation practice, which improves her translation ability. Also, the translator summarizes the translation strategies of long and complex sentences for future study.
