| Li Ch’ing-chao is one of the greatest poetesses in the history of Chinese literature and her works have profound influence all over the world. This study aims to adopt the appraisal theory to compare the attitude resources distributed in Li’s Ci poems and the translations by James Cryer and Xu Yuanchong. To conduct the contrastive study, this thesis first identifies the attitude resources in the original poems and translations based on text analysis. Then it uses the UAM Corpus tool to calculate the quantity and frequency of each kind of attitude resource, including their polarity and explicitness.Next,a detailed comparison is conducted to explore in what aspects the distributions of attitudinal expressions are different between source texts and target texts. After that, the main reasons that lead to these differences are discussed.Through comparison and discussion, this study finds:1)the attitude resources are abundant in Li’s Ci-poetry,but the quantity declines in the translations;the percentage of affect resources decreases in the English versions, while that of appreciation resources increases;2)in terms of polarity and explicitness, explicit resources and positive resources take up a larger part in the translations than the original poems;3)the divergence of attitudinal expressions is mainly embodied in omission, explicitness, changing types and mistranslations of attitude resources;4)reasons for the differences include the habitus of translators, translation purpose, translation strategy, and language difference between English and ChineseThe limitation of this study is it only analyzes the attitude resources of 15 representative works of Li.Future studies can enlarge the research scale and include systems of engagement and graduation into research to reach a more comprehensive conclusion. |
