Truman Capote(1924—1984)is a famous contemporary American novelist and screenwriter who won the O.Henry Award three times in 1946,1947 and 1951,and the National Academy of Literature and Arts Award in 1959.In addition to his novels,he also published a large number of short stories in his life,which had a profound influence on American literature.Capote's short stories are concise and thought-provoking,which contain all kinds of small characters who carrying the ups and downs and traumas of the times.This provides us with the possibility of excavating the potential meaning of the text of the novel,that is,from the perspective of trauma,from the outside of these short stories deep inside,to further explore the form of trauma writing in their short stories,the pursuit of causes and unique artistic techniques.This thesis mainly includes three parts.Introduction,main part,and conclusion.The introduction first reviews the existing research results of Capote's short stories,clarifies the issues that need to be discussed and worthy of further discussion,and at the same time combs the development of trauma theory as a whole,defines the concept of trauma writing,and clarifies the direction of the thesis.Finally,it explains the trauma writing value of Capote's short stories and points out the research significance.The main part of the thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter focuses on the multiple forms of trauma writing in Capote's short stories.According to Freud's trauma psychology and the modern trauma theory of Carus and others,the first section interprets war trauma,explaining the incurable sequelae of war in the Second World War environment and the psychological stress and mental problems of people after the war,explaining Capote's attitude to the war and the social significance of his war trauma writing.The second section analyzes the family trauma in the text,discusses the hallucinations,nightmares,violent injuries,alienation,and other traumatic phenomena manifested by the characters in the process ofindustrialization,and explains the unspeakable characteristics of trauma.The third section begins with the cultural trauma of text expression,analyzing the dilemma of homosexual emotional tendencies and the problem sexual confusion.The second chapter of the thesis explains the motivation of the trauma writing in Capote's short stories,analyzes the influence of Capote's childhood growth experience on the expression of trauma and explores the deep roots of trauma writing in the context of social background.Chapter Three focuses on the aesthetic representation of trauma writing.Discuss separately the author's writing strategies for traumatic writing,namely the selection of image clusters,narrative skills,and the three stylized presentations of visual description.The concluding part summarizes the viewpoints,makes an overall evaluation of Capote's trauma writing,explains the general social significance of Capote's short stories trauma writing,and reflects on the current situation.
