The Translation Of Meaning In Good Faith From The Perspective Of Leech's Seven Types Of Meaning

To do translation is to translate meanings after all.Therefore,studying translation from the perspective of semantics is both feasible and having guiding significance to translation practice.British linguist Geoffrey Leech classifies meanings into seven types,which provides a good perspective for studying meaning translation.Based on the examples in Good Faith,this paper discusses the translation of meaning from three aspects—social meaning,affective meaning and thematic meaning.As for the translation of social meaning,for those quotes from the Bible which are not noted by the writer,the author mainly adopts compensatory measures by adding supplement information,to convey the social meaning contained in the original text.With regard to the translation of dialogues,the author tries to keep the stylistic features of spoken language.As for the translation of affective meaning,the author gives careful consideration to the context,the meaning of each word,as well as the feelings and attitudes of the characters,trying to find the closest expression in the target language so as to convey the affective meaning implied in the original text to the greatest extent.As for the translation of thematic meaning,for the meaning conveyed by word order,the author tries to adopt appropriate word order in target language to produce similar emphasis in the translation.For the words in italics,to keep the emphasis of the original story and convey the thematic meaning of the sentence,the author stresses the corresponding part by using bold wording,repeating,placing at the end of the sentence,and so on.From the perspective of Leech's seven types of meaning,translators could pay attention to the existence of different types of meanings,so as to translate them by applying various translation methods.By reviewing translation from the angle of seven types of meaning,translators could assess and improve their translation.
