Franz Kafka's novels focus on living experience of marginal men.We could find some of them who live in fear and have an insecure self. These figures were in an untrusted, unstable, persecuted environment and felt unsafe deeply.Their primary motivation for life was to gain a sense of security.Gaining security occupied the whole meaning of their lives. So,they wanted to connect with others, learnt the social order and avoided being attacked by unknown dangers.Figures in the representative novels of this dissertation all felt insecure.Specifically, the theme of The Metamorphosis is a man feeling insecure in his family. The hero,Gregor, suddenly became a sick man isolated by his family members. He feared of being abandoned by them,so he felt extremely insecure. The Castle and The Trial describe persons' sense of insecurity in a social system. There were two causes of K's insecurity: the system's errors and his ignorance of the system.Kafka also explores other social and philosophical issues through the insecurity of figures.A conversation with the Supplicant shows that the insecurity came from the lack of subjectivity.Josephine the Singer,or the Mouse Folk presents the dialectical relationship between music needs and security needs. The Burrow points out a paradox that people wanted security, but they can never get it.In modern times, the issue of security is even more important.Kafka's novels remind us to pay attention to the fate of marginalized people and to question the unreasonable legal and political system.
