Edmund Burke was not only an important figure in British politics in the 18 th century, but also an important representative of the conservative political school.Buck was first a Whig who stood for freedom, and his faith in freedom ran through his life.Second,as a man of action, his understanding of freedom has been translated into concrete political life. From calling on the British government to reconcile with the Americas,to opposing the French revolution,to the relentless impeachment of the governor of India,Hastings, these current political comments have demonstrated Burke's conservative liberal ideas. The connotation of this idea means that freedom is a part of British tradition, and respecting tradition is to protect freedom. The rights of abstract freedom advocated by the French revolution have no historical basis or possibility of realization. As a traditional value, freedom does not conflict with conservatism and is guarded in a conservative way.Through the adherence to tradition,British constitutionalism and freedom,we can see the internal consistency of Burke's thought, rather than the inconsistency criticized.Burke's conservative liberal thought not only deeply influenced European and American politics, but also had certain significance to the deepening reform process of contemporary China, opening up ideas for socialist modernization. The article takes Burke's liberal thought as the core, centering on the two key words of Burke's thought: tradition and conservatism to clarify the connotation of the liberal tradition. The article argues that in the social background of 18 th century Britain,Burke was deeply influenced by Cicero, empiricism and Kirk thought, and formed a conservative thought with unique British characteristics.Burke's Conservative is relative to liberal radicalism. Both agree with the value of freedom, but dispute the way to realize freedom.Burke believes that the realization of freedom must rely on tradition and adapt to the needs of The Times with conservative reform. Thus,to be conservative and liberal should be opposed to radicalism.Meanwhile,as a kind of traditional value, the preservation of tradition is the protection of freedom. Therefore,Burke also opposes the enlightenment of rationality and believes that the supremacy of rationality destroys tradition. However, the study of Burke's liberal thought from the perspective of tradition and conservatism is bound to be biased.
