A Study Of Terrorist Reports By Egyptian Media Since "Arab Spring"

Terrorism and its related violence and extremism are among the most urgent challenges and threats facing the Arab region and the world.Terrorist attacks aroused around the people without warning,causing many losses of personal property.They will even undermine social stability,hinder economic development,and spread negative emotions of fear and anxiety among the people.On the other hand,both traditional media and modern media have played a pivotal role in discussing social issues,including,of course,terrorism,a problem involving all aspects of society.Only by careful monitoring of covering limitation can the news media minimize the negative impact of terrorism on the basis of conveying correct information to the public.This article is divided into two parts: The first part selects a total of 41 articles in 5 newspapers and 38 video clips of 5 different TV programs as a sample which were released five days after the political assassination of the Attorney General of Egypt,Barakart on June 29,2015.Evaluations are completed on professional levels of media holding different positions of this issue.The second part is a questionnaire of 41 different media in Egypt for understanding and analyzing their practices in dealing with terrorist incidents,and the priority is given to some issues that may trigger dispute in news and media practice.Based on the above analysis results,this paper puts forward five aspects that the media should pay attention to in terrorism reporting: First,showing the real event information to the public under the premise of maintaining social stability and national security.Second,avoiding inciting hatred,discrimination between different parties and groups and spreading positive values.Third,cautiously publishing unverified news on social media in today's era of fast flow of information.Fourth,abiding by the moral line of media practitioners and protecting the privacy of victims.Fifth,possessing the quality of humanity while exerting positive impacts in society to avoid spreading negative emotions to the public.
