The historical background of the rise of artificial intelligence of law in Japan: In1968,the world's first expert system was born.In 1977,Edward Feigenbaum proposed the concept of "knowledge engineering".Since then, the development of artificial intelligence has reached a new stage. In 1981,Japan announced to the world of their fifth generation computer ten Year(1982-1992)plan,which based on the theory and technology of knowledge engineering and expert system, they chosen logic programming language as the core language todevelop the intelligent computers for symbolic reasoning. After the failure of the fifth generation of the general artificial intelligence program,Japan launched a legal artificial intelligence program. The hardware and prolog language of the fifth generation machine is the hardware and software system for realizing the legal artificial intelligence scheme in Japanese. In 1993,japan announced the implementation of a “Legal Expert System” focus field study(1993-1998).Under the leadership of Professor Yoshino Hajime of the Meiji University Law School, the Japanese legal expert system was constructed.Japan legal artificial intelligence is based on the development of the legal expert system. They used the new viewpoint and method which named " Logical jurisprudence",which proposed by Yoshino Hajime. On the basis of clarifying the structure of legal knowledge,Japanese researchers plan to use knowledge representation to turn legal knowledge into computer language,to do legal inferences on imported cases through reasoning mechanisms, and plan to use natural language conversion interface to show inference results and reasoning basis. The research team actually using the prolog programming language to built the knowledge base of the< United Nations Convention on contracts for the international Sales of Goods>,and finally constructed the inferenceinterpretation execution system LES-5 in 1998.Japan's research have their unique aspects, such as theoretical methods, knowledge representation and reasoning models, and natural language research, but ultimately fail to overcome the inherent problems of the expert system and the new prolem in legal expert system.Due to LES-5's many limitations,it has not been recognized by the market.in2002,Yoshino Hajime turned to the field of legal education and advocated the Combination of artificial intelligence technology and law to develop creative legal education. This thesis will mainly introduce the development of legal artificial intelligence in Japanese and the construction of Japan's legal expert system, and finally analyze the reasons why the Japan's legal expert system research has been failed, also will explore the vigilance and revelation of the failure.
