Isolationism is the traditional American foreign policy guiding ideology. In the process of the rise of the United States as a world power, the foreign policy dominated by traditional isolationism has created an important international peaceful environment for the United States to focus on domestic affairs and try to avoid external disputes. After the Second World War,the United States became the most powerful country in the world, and its interests spread all over the world. The isolationist diplomacy was no longer in line with US interests, and global interventionist diplomacy became a natural choice.Although isolationism is not standing in the middle of the US diplomatic arena,it has not left this stage. In a sense, isolationism has become a cultural gene, which is deeply embedded in the body of the American nation.Whenever there is a dilemma in the United States and abroad, isolationism will have an impact on diplomacy with various new manifestations. The new isolationism has new features in terms of diplomatic status, integration with other ideas, and scope of application. The new isolationism does not deny the American internationalist diplomatic line, but emphasizes that more national resources should be used to solve domestic problems and avoid overseas responsibility as much as possible. The current isolationism of the Trump administration is having a profound impact on the free trade order, global governance and the direction of globalization. We should correctly understand and respond effectively to its negative impact. The role of isolationism in American diplomacy cannot be expanded or ignored.A correct understanding of isolationism is of great significance for us to understand American foreign policy, make appropriate prejudgments and respond to measures.
