In the advisory opinion on the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in 1965,the Advisory Jurisdiction of the International Court of justice was challenged due to a pending dispute between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius. This article will take the "Chagos Islands opinion case" as an example to explore the source and effect of the right of the International Court of justice's advisory jurisdiction, analyze how the International Court of justice exercises its advisory jurisdiction, and the relationship between the court's advisory jurisdiction and the right of people's self-determination arising from the case. Its conclusion is that in order for the advisory opinion to have power beyond the political implementation mechanisms of the general assembly and the Security Council,it must be persuaded by the convincing application of international law to the facts of full development.
