Objective:With the development of the sports science and technology,many kinds of wrist-wearable activity devices that can monitor the physical activity,sleep and so on have emerged in recent years.Monitoring your physical activity data by these devices to promote the increasement of physical activity by achieving daily or long-term goals.Therefore,they have utilized by more and more people in the field of consumer and research.At present,there are some studies about discussing the validity of the wrist-wearable devices on monitoring physical activity,which are mostly based on laboratory conditions and the object of study for adults.It has not been verified that the validity of monitoring the energy expenditure and steps of different types of physical activity in adolescents.The purpose of study is to examine the validity of the wrist-wearable devices on monitoring energy expenditure and steps of different types of physical activity compared with metabolic chamber and Actigraph GT3X+ in adolescents so as to provide the scientific evidence for the application of the wrist-wearable activity devices.Methods:Twenty-two(14-18 years)healthy boys(n=13)and girls(n=9)wore tweleve different types of activity devices(Actigraph GT3X+,Xiaomi,Fitbit,UP,Connect,Misfit,Huawei,Bong2 s,Golife,Withings,Midong,Polar),while completing sedentary activities(listening music,reading and watching lecture videos),irregular activities(doing housework and doing radio gymnastics)and regular activities(slow walking at the speed of 3.2km/h,fast walking at the speed of 5.6km/h,jogging at the speed of 8.0km/h).Results:1)The correlation coefficient between the wrist-wearable devices and metabolic chamber for the total energy expenditure,sedentary activities,irregular activities and regular activities ranged from 0.76(Withings)~0.93(Connect),0.57(Connect)~0.92(Golife),0.63(Golife,Polar)~0.76(UP)and 0.05(Bong2s)~0.90(UP).2)The correlation coefficient between the wrist-wearable devices and GT3X+for the total steps,the steps of irregular activities,the steps of slow walking,fast walking and jogging ranged from0.32(Golife)~0.76(Connect)?0.64(Golife)~0.91(Withings)?-0.19(Bong2s)~0.34(??)?-054(Golife)~0.46(??)and 0.57(Golife)~0.75(Polar?Connect).3)The Mean Absolute Error Percentage for the total energy expenditure,sedentary activities,irregular activities and regular activities ranged from7.0%(Polar)~33.2%(Midong),9.4%(Connect)~31.7%(Midong),18.9%(Misfit)~43.2%(Midong)and9.7%(Connect)~77.3%(Fitbit).4)The Mean Absolute Error Percentage for the total steps,the steps of irregular activities,the steps of slow walking,fast walking and jogging ranged from16.9%(Bong2s)~41.2%(Connect)?19.7%(Withings)~57.1%(Huawei)?,83.3%(Bong2s)~157.2%(??),73.1%(Bong2s)~118.4%(Polar)and 23.0%(Golife)~41.2%(Connect).Conclusions:1)The wrist-wearable activity devices monitoring the total energy expenditure and energy expenditure of sedentary activities with a relatively low error rate compared with the monitoring of irregular activities and regular activities energy expenditure.2)All wrist-wearable activity devices monitoring 5.6km/h fast walking have significant differences compared with GT3X+;all wrist-wearable activity devices overestimated the total steps of physical activities;3)The price and validity of wrist-wearable activity devices does not seem to have any relevance,and the price of the wrist-wearable activity devices may be related to other aspects(eg,gamification,comfort,beauty,etc.).Therefore,you can choose wrist-wearable activity devices according to your needs.
