As one of the elements of educational activities, environment can not only directly educate students through campus environment layout, but also help students form positive psychological quality indirectly through implicit factors in the environment. In order to explore whether the shape in the environment would affect students' understanding of the character, and to put forward some suggestions on how to make use of the different shapes in the surrounding environment in the school to potentially carry on the mental health education for the middle school students. From the perspective of metaphor, the study selected circular and square as the experimental material.Through the empirical research, the study aims to explore the impact of the shape in the middle school students character judgment, and whether there are differences among the impacts of different target race. The study includes three parts:Study 1 The circular and square metaphor character differences in junior high school students research.Participants were all from middle schools in Tianjin,55 junior middle school students were selected to participate in the experiment,of which 29.were boys and 26 were girls. The design.of our experiments are 2(shape:circular,square)×2(shape character adjective consistency:consistent and inconsistent)×2(races:alien,native)between subjects design. The dependent variables were the score of character judgment to the target, personality adjectives selected eight words "gentle","flexible","cunning","slick","upright","serious","unkind" and "stereotyped".The results showed that the main effect of consistency between shape and character adjectives is significant, and the main effect of race is significant. The interaction between shape and shape-adjective consistency is emerged, and the rest is not significant. Therefore, circles and squares can be metaphorical to different characters in junior middle school students.Such shape metaphor does not differ among different target races.Study 2 The circular and square metaphor character differences in senior high school students research.Participants were all from middle schools in Tianjin,50 senior high school students were selected to participate in the experiment,of which 28 were boys and 22 were girls.Experimental design and experimental materials are the same as that in Study 1.The results showed that the main effect of consistency between shape and character adjectives was significant, and the main effect of race was significant. The interaction between shape and shape-adjective consistency is emerged,The interaction between shape and race is emerged, and the rest is not significant. Therefore, circles and squares can be metaphorical to different characters in senior middle school students.Such shape metaphor does not differ among different target races.Study 3 The word association studies of circular and square for middle school students.A total of 154 students from a middle school in Tianjin(differs from the participants of Study land Study 2)were selected to fill in the Word Association Questionnaire,of which 67 were boys and 87 were girls,78 were junior school students and 76 were senior high school students. The students are required w:rite down five character adjectives according to the circular and square freely. The result shows that, when the participants saw the circular, they were pushed to have different word association in mind from those when seeing the square.Under the experimental conditions, the results show that:(1)Circular can be metaphorical to the character of "gentle" and "flexible",square can be metaphorical to the character of "upright" in the middle and high school students.(2)Circular metaphor and square metaphor do not differ among different target races in junior and high school students. The results of this study can be applied to the layout of psychological counseling room and emotional catharsis room, and the construction of campus culture. In order to put forward some suggestions on how to make use of the different shapes in the surrounding environment in the school to potentially carry on the mental health education for the middle school students.
