University-industry knowledge interaction has always been considered as one of the key elements of the national innovation system, which plays an indispensable role in promoting technological innovation and accelerating economic development.Since 2006,Guangdong has established agreements with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering,in order to promote the interaction between firms, universities and research institutes.Firms interact with universities through diversified channels, which is beneficial to technological innovation and economic development in Guangdong. But crossregional interaction between firms and universities will be influenced by proximity and research quality of universities. Most of papers are mostly limited to specific types of university-industry interaction channels, ignoring that proximity and research quality of universities will have different effect on different channels. In order to fill this gap, this study collected data on the extent to which a sample of 166 Guangdong manufacturing firms draw from the intra-regional,cross-regional,subnational and overseas universities,as well as high quality universities and other average quality universities.Firstly, this study described the extent to which firms interacted with universities through diversified channels. The result showed that the types of university-industry channels are diversified. However generally, the degree that firm engage with universities is not high.Secondly, the study explored the relationship between regional proximity and university research capabilities for research services and support, collaborative research, and commercialization of research results by constructing seemingly uncorrelated regression models. Our results revealed that:(i)In term of regional proximity,we found that intra-regional,subnational and overseas universities linkages will contribute to the extent to which firms engage in research services and support. However, firms will only tend to choose collaborative research when they cooperate with intra-regional universities, and choose commercialization of research results when they cooperate with overseas universities.(ii)In term of research quality, high quality university linkages are more beneficial to collaborative research. But these linkages have no effect on the research services and support and commercialization of research results.(iii)In term of the compound effect of proximity and research quality of universities,we found that intra-regional high quality university linkages and intra-regional average university linkages are both effective in research services and support, but the effect of intra-regional high quality university linkages collaborative research is significantly higher. In addition,we also found that intra-regional high quality university linkages, intraregional average university linkages,cross-regional high quality university linkages, crossregional average university linkages have no effect on the commercialization of research results. But we also analyzed the commercialization of research results deeply. The results showed that firms were more willing to interact with intra-regional high quality university and overseas universities through purchase or license agreements of university-generated intellectual property, but they only set up equity agreements or joint ventures with overseas universities. Finally, this study also constructed Heckman two-stage model to eliminate sample selection bias, but the results showed that there was no sample selection bias.
