Joel spring is a famous American radical education historian and multicultural educator.His works have far-reaching influence on both at home and abroad.Although there are some domestic studies on Joel spring and his works,few scholars have fully studied his educational history.Based on this,this paper,through careful study of Joel spring’s works,this paper preliminarily discusses his educational historical view.The radical revised historiography of education can best reflect the characteristics of Spring’s education historical view.On the one hand,Spring’s educational historical view is from the perspective of class opposition and he believes that class contradictions cannot be reconciled.A series of reforms in education field,including the establishment of public schools,are all aimed at safeguarding the interests of the ruling class and oppressing the laboring masses.On the other hand,Spring wrote the history of education from the perspective of the people at the bottom of society,sympathized with the vulnerable groups,and the research content mostly involved the education of minorities,immigrants and other vulnerable groups.He opposed the discrimination in education in the United States,which promoted the formation of the historical school of multicultural education.This paper mainly adopts the literature analysis and comparative analysis,and uses Joel spring’s works and speeches as the first-hand materials to study his educational historical views.It is closely related to the research objectives and is divided into five parts:In the first part,domestic and foreign researches on Joel spring’s educational thoughts are sorted out.The research on Joel spring’s educational thoughts at home and abroad can be roughly summarized as the following aspects: the research on Joel spring’s multicultural thought,globalization thought and consumerism thought.As a whole,there is no systematic and complete explanation of its educational historical view system.The second part introduces Joel spring’s academic experience and educational works.The author found that spring’s background in sociology and history of mind laid a foundation for his "bottom-up" restatement of American education history.This is also the reason why he believes that school education is an ideological manipulation by the state,the government and the society to the public and control students’ freedom of thought.In addition,Joel spring’s Indian descent also led him to pay attention to the history of native Americans,Indian culture and education,as well as racist education and multicultural education,and finally formed his radical historical view of education.The third part analyzes the social background of Joel spring’s radical historical view of education and the influence of some ideological trends.In the 1950 s and 1960 s,the growing gap between rich and poor in the United States led to a series of civil rights movements and fierce criticism of public education.In this context,Joel spring,as a member of the minority,thinking a series of programs adopted by the American government to alleviate social conflicts was conservative,and they actually did not make radical changes to the social and economic system.In addition,Joel spring’s view on the history of education was deeply influenced by the radical historiography,critical pedagogy,school criticism and neo-marxism.He believed that education should be free,and people should have the ability of self-reflection,critically understand the world and become a liberated individual.The fourth part systematically discusses Joel spring’s radical educational historical view system,which is the focus of this paper.Through email exchanges with Joel spring,the author discusses his views on the nature and disciplinary value of education history,and studies education history from the perspectives of religion,race,nationalism,language and culture by using the method of the unification of Atlantic historical view and cultural historical view.From the perspective of cultural history or ideological history,readers can see how the national culture of other countries under the western school model was invaded and occupied,and became a tool for colonial countries to inculcate nationalist emotion,politics and ethical values.In addition,the author tries to analyze the differences between Joel spring’s educational historical view and traditional educational historical view and moderate revisionist educational historical view.In the fifth part,the author analyzes the progressiveness and limitation of Joel spring’s radical historical view of education.In the author’s opinion,Joel spring follows the trend of the new history of education,moving down the research horizon and broadening the research perspective of the history of education,making people rethink the nature and value of the history of education.Although he expanded the definition of education,the scope of his research was still limited to schools.In conclusion,this study is of great significance both in theory and in practice.It is expected that through the author’s analysis,readers can have a full and comprehensive understanding of Joel spring’s educational history.Joel spring;Historiography of Education;Radical;Class contradictions.
