Research On The Female Image On The Cover Of Women Of China In The 40 Years Of Reform And Opening-up

2018 is the fortieth anniversary of reform and opening-up.Since the reform and opening-up,Chinese society has undergone tremendous and profound changes.The female image of the cover of the official Chinese women’s magazine Women of China has also changed during the changing times.Women of China is a women’s magazine with a long history and growing up with New China.It has experienced the transition period of Chinese society and witnessed important changes in Chinese history.As an official publication of the All-China Women’s Federation,Women of China has always occupied a place in the process of the times.The cover of Women of China presents the charm of Chinese women’s role models with vivid visual images.The female image on the cover has also experienced important historical changes with the advancement of the times,documenting and reflecting the changes of Chinese society.It is of great significance to study the concept and status of Chinese women and the changes of Chinese society in the 40 years of reform and opening-up.This paper takes Women of China as the research object from the cover of the reform and opening up in 1978 to 2018.The main research method adopted is the content analysis.446 valid samples from July 1978 to July 2018 were extracted and coded and decoded from five dimensions: physiological image,body image,national image,professional image and social image.Combining the relevant theories of Gender and Feminism,this paper probes into the changes of the female image created by the cover of Women of China in the 40 years of reform and opening-up,so as to probe into the Chinese society in the 40 years of reform and opening-up.The introduction describes the origin of this paper,literature review,research purpose,research methods,research design and so on.The first chapter is a general description of the cover female image of Women of China in the 40 years of reform and opening up,presenting the profile of the cover female characters of Women of China in the 40 years of reform and opening up,as well as the changes of physiological,physical,national,professional and social images of the cover female in the four decades of reform and opening-up(1978-1984,1985-1995,1996-2004,2005-2018).The second chapter explores the changes of the female image on the cover of Women of China in the40 years of reform and opening-up,explores the typical female image created on the cover of Women of China in different periods,and the characteristics of the changes.The research finds that the female images on the cover of Women of China have experienced the historical evolution in the working women image in the construction of the four modernizations from 1978 to 1984,the beautiful female image in the trend of reform from 1985 to 1995,the professional female image in the market economy era from 1996 to 2004,and the star female image in the globalization era from 2005 to 2018.It presents the prominent characteristics of the emergence and transformation of feminine temperament and the changes of female profession from pluralism to singleness.The third chapter examines the cover female image from the perspective of Gender,and analyses the visual presentation under ideology.The common feature of the cover female image created by Women of China in each period of 40 years of reform and opening up is to present women of the times who represent the nation,and to carry out gender integration in the process of image-building.In the grand narrative,the attention to housewives,bottom female groups and ethnic minority women is relatively less,so there is some distortion in reflecting the real situation of Chinese women.The portrayal of cover women is influenced by political,economic,social,cultural and values,and the balance is always grasped in the tension of various forces.The conclusion summarizes the full text.Generally speaking,the evolution of the female image on the cover of Women of China is inextricably linked with the development of society.The change of the female image on the cover actually reflects the change of the concept and status of Chinese women in the 40 years of reform and opening-up as well as the great change of Chinese society.
