| Crowd psychology is in a very awkward position in communication research: on the one hand,it has not completely disappeared, and the relevant theoretical works represented by The Crowd are either used as a treasure to answer the abstract group problems of the mass, the public,or regarded as a supplementary reference to solve the real group turmoil. On the other hand, its "appearance" in communication studies more or less follows a set of broken and vague mythological patterns and is not treated seriously.Scholars have hailed it as a "prophecy of The Times," a profound diagnosis of the 20 th century.Or see it as unscientific nonsense,as artful rhetoric steeped in the ideology of European conservatism.Crowd psychology's history was ignored, the result is: the concept, semantic and related theory of communication produced by the "crowd","public" and "mass" cannot fully understand, theory and practice and so on can not get effective understanding, new and old vast historical rupture between crowd theory is unable to get a reasonable explanation. In this context, people should realize that it is very necessary to clarify the history of knowledge evolution of the crowd and its integration with communication theory, which plays an important role in the development of communication research and the reflection on the drawbacks in the development of disciplines. It is based on this assumption that this paper attempts to look for the association between the crowd and communication in history, trying to understand: how is communication imagined when the crowd becomes the focus of description; How the crowd are presented when communication is established as an important research object. In order to achieve the above goals, this paper will attempt to outline the development trajectory of crowd psychology in American society, reveal the prosperity and decline of different semantics in it,and describe the connection and mutual influence between them and communication. |
