A Study Of China-related Reports From Al Jazeera English(2017-2019)

As the world's second largest economy,China's rapid rise has attracted worldwide attention.At the same time,negative comments related to China from the international community have never stopped,and the national image of China still needs to be improved.From the perspective of international relations,China and the Arab world have a long history and have maintained friendly exchanges and trade cooperation for a long time.A1 Jazeera English faces the Arab world,and its position in the international communication pattern cannot be underestimated.Therefore,the study of China-related reports from Al Jazeera English not only affects the bilateral relationship between China and Arab countries,but also affects the global audience's perception of China's image.Under the background of the new era,there are two main purposes of the study of China-related reports from Al Jazeera English.On the one hand,it aims to make up for the shortcomings of previous researches on global mainstream media in developing countries,and to answer more comprehensively how the international community views China and constructs China's image;on the other hand,it can also provide direction and support for China to build its own national image,and help China strengthen its international communication capacity building.The text of this study is China-related reports from Al Jazeera English(2017.10.1-2019.1.31).The main research questions are:1.What is the reporting framework implied by the Al Jazeera English?2.What are the characteristics of China's national image created by the Al Jazeera English?Using content analysis and text analysis,guided by framework theory,this paper analyzes the overall characteristics of the China-related reports from Al Jazeera English,the framework of the reports,and the national image of China,and analyzes the reasons behind them.Specifically,the national image of China constructed by Al Jazeera English is:politically actively participating in international affairs and lacking democracy in the internal strength;Chinese economy keeps a good momentum of steady growth,and Sino-US trade frictions continue;disasters occur frequently,and social contradictions are prominent;environmental governance is effectively promoted,and pollution problems need to be improved;science and technology development is leading the world,and scientific and technological achievements benefit the people;military strength is constantly improving,and China is committed to defending national sovereignty and security;traditional culture is popular,and it is integrated with modern technology.Finally,this paper puts forward suggestions for promoting the construction and dissemination of the national image of China:firstly,China's national image orientation should be clarified;secondly,China should not only tell the Chinese stories well,but also tell the stories of the world well;thirdly,China should spread voice with the help of foreign media;last but not least,China should promote public diplomacy and humanistic exchanges.
