In the past decade,the applications of barcodes have experienced a boosting development.QR codes and some similar barcodes are becoming a convenient and popular approach to impromptu communication between mobile devices and their surrounding cyber-physical world.Mobile applications for mobile communications,payment,authentication such as Wechat,Alipay utilize barcodes as a reliable,fast communication tool that does not require device pairing.However,despite the ubiquity of barcodes,they suffer from two drawbacks: poor viewing experience and inability to be identified through itself.Barcode users cannot identify the contents in a barcode merely through the random permutations of black and white modules,and these modules greatly impair users' visual experiences.In order to improve barcodes' user experience and their visual effect quality,a new barcode needs to be designed.On the basis of satisfying communications between smartphones,this barcode should help users identify the contents in it in some way.Based on this demand,we put forward a new barcode,Adaptive Robust doT matrix Barcode(ARTcode),which aims to preserve ART and Code features in one visual pattern.It works on any surface(paper or electronic displays)and is able to convert any image or any form of human-readable contents(e.g.,a picture,a logo,a slogan)into an ARTCode.Different from existing barcodes,ARTcode looks like an image which retains human-readable and aesthetically pleasant contents,and in the meanwhile,it acts as a QR code which conveys data bits over the visual channel.We put forward three key points for ARTcode.The first key point is colored dot matrix.ARTcode provides the basis for encoding through transforming any image into a colored dot matrix.A colored dot matrix maintains major information of the original image.The second key point is a data hiding approach.ARTcode encodes data with a data hiding approach,which can largely reduce the visual distortion of embedded data on images.The third key point is its comprehensive decoding scheme.ARTcode applies colors to transmit data.Our comprehensive decoding scheme can enhance decoding robustness against noises and interferences from the original image in ARTCODE.In this thesis,we also introduce evaluation approaches according to the application requirements for ARTcode.Specifically,this thesis presents a subjective user study aimed at evaluating ARTcode's image quality preservations ability,and some experiments evaluating ARTcode's stability under different scanning environments.These two evaluations confirmed that ARTcode can work on any image,and has excellent data transmission ability under normal scanning environments.The ARTcode proposed in this thesis has a strongly positive impact on device-device or device-cyber physical world communications.
