Because the traditional network architectures are difficult to radically change and adapt today's expanding network scale, the breakthrough based on the network architecture is the trend of the times, and a novel networking architecture, called Software-Defined Networking(SDN),emerges as the times require. In the traditional network, the multicast technology cannot support the operation and deployment of services effectively due to the compatibility issue of network devices. It is imperative to implement the multicast services based on the SDN architecture. Therefore, taking advantage of the unified control of SDN and combining with the Bit Indexed Explicit Replication(BIER)technology, this thesis designs and implements an SDN-based multicast application(APP).Firstly, the thesis analyzes the current research of the multicast in the SDN network, discusses the limitations of current multicast communication technologies, and points out the necessity of designing multicast application based on the SDN architecture.Additionally, the multicast technology,BIER and other related technologies of the designed multicast application are briefly introduced.Furthermore, according to the demand analysis and referring to the characteristics of BIER technology with high scalability, rapid convergence and strong applicability, the design scheme of the SDN multicast application based on BIER is given. The designed application is mainly constructed as an SDN controller component and embedded in the controller. That is to say, after the application is developed in the upper application layer, the step of calling the northbound interface for information interaction can be eliminated. The multicast application can identify and parse the multicast packet, determine the packet type based on the parsed group member information, and perform the corresponding group member join and exit operations using the group member table. In addition,a Remote Procedure Call(RPC)function is implemented for the query of specific group member information and the visualization of the group member information. The application consists of four functional modules, namely, multicast group management protocol parse, multicast group member management,BIER communication, and RPC-based group member record calls. The thesis constructs and implements the application, and integrates these modules into the OpenDaylight controller and makes it to be a multicast controller that can handle the various steps in the multicast group communication. After introducing the BIER technology, the multicast forwarding table and the multicast protocol in intermediate network nodes will not required in the multicast packet forwarding process, and the multicast communication can be performed by exchanging the information of the multicast source and the receivers directly. Moreover, the multicast communication with BIER in SDN-based networks has obvious advantages in terms of accuracy and efficiency for multicast traffic forwarding. In this thesis,Java is the underlying development language, and the functions of the designed multicast application are implemented based on the internal component development of OpenDaylight controller. The simulation network is built by a simulation software Mininet. The designed application is applied for multicast communication, and its functions are tested via Iperf,VLC player and some other tools. The simulation results show that the multicast application designed in the thesis can parse and forward the multicast packets in the network. In addition,it can process and provide the keyword query service according to the changes of multicast group members. The effectiveness of the multicast application applying the BIER technology has also been verified to some extent.
