Abstract/Summary:
With the great improvement of economic and cultural level and the courtesy of people, museums that have many functions such as education, communication, collection, display, social services, etc.have played an increasingly important role in people's lives. And museum publications become important cultural carriers, which is portable and easy to preserve, carrying a large amount of information and can be read anytime and anywhere despite the time and space, nowadays museum publications have become a powerful extension of the museum's various functions. At the same time, museum publishing, which is an important part of the museum's business, has been developing since the establishment of the museum.Today, museum publishing deserves more attention.Considering that museum publishing is a kind of resource publishing, the development of publishing business depends to a large extent on the volume and scale of museums. There is a huge gap in the publishing level of museums at all levels.Based on such recognition, this article focuses on the publishing of first-class museums printed publications, digital publishing achievements such as online museum visiting,APP development, and audio and video publishing are beyond the scope of this article. This thesis adopted the literature research methodolody, interview methodology and case study methodology.I read extensive relevant documents about museum publishing, and staffs from the National Palace Museum,Nanjing Museum,Zhejiang Museum and other representative domestic first-class museums were interviewed, from which I gained an in-depth understanding of museum publishers' work processes and publication results. The case study methodology supplies interview data from the Palace Museum staff involved in writing, editing, designing and project-management.The "circulation of communication" model proposed by the American scholar Robert Darnton is an important reference for this thesis. In this model, the creation, production, sales, and reading of books are an inseparable whole. No one link can form a overall publishing picture.I applied this model with a slight modification to museum publishing. The museum's publishing cycle can be divided into three levels: external influences, the production process of publications, and readers' reading feedback.Based on the publishing cycle, this thesis discusses the overall publishing situation of museums in China and the case Palace Museum especially. After years of development,China's museum publishing has achieved some results, but the problems in publishing work are particularly obvious. On a macro level, the Matthew effect has already appeared, the first-tier museums rich in resources, such as the Palace Museum, often have the ability to mobilize more forces for publishing, while it would be something difficult for some smaller museums to get books published. To some extent, the Palace Museum represents the highest level of publication in museums in China, and is well above the average. On the micro level, the problems existing in the internal publishing work of various museums have also been exposed more thoroughly. In view of the nature of the museum 's institutions in China, the lack of publishing enthusiasm is a common phenomenon, because the publication achievements do not bring corresponding rewards.Publishing has become a burden, either for writers or editors. And the direct consequence of the low enthusiasm for publishing is that the commercialization of museum publishing is not high, which is manifested in repeated topic selection, backward aesthetics, irrational pricing, and lack of communication functions. In order to cope with the above problems,I draw extensively from foreign museum publishing experience, and put forward suggestions from the aspects of commercial improvement, academic and communication balance, brand building, optimization of publishing process, attention to readers, industry and government support, etc. With a view to providing some references for museum publications in China.
