The balance between incremental innovation and radical innovation has an important impact on the development of enterprises. To achieve the balance of incremental innovation and radical innovation is very important to the development of enterprises. This study collects 193 effective samples from manufacturing enterprises through questionnaire survey, and uses structural equation model and bootstrap program to test the two dimensions of customer participation-consumer Participation as an information resource(CPI)andconsumer Participation as a co-developer(CPC)in balanced incremental innovation and radical innovation and its influencing mechanism. The results show that,CPI and CPI both have significant positive effects on incremental innovation and radical innovation, but CPI has a greater impact on incremental innovation than radical innovation, while CPC has greater impact on radical innovation than incremental innovation. In addition, the analysis results of the structural equation model also show that,CPI and CPC impact the incremental innovation and radical innovation through the customer knowledge development and the innovation competencies of the enterprise.Specifically, the impact of CPI and CPC on incremental innovation is mediated by the depth of customer knowledge developmentand exploitation capability whereas the impact of CPI and CPC on radical innovation is mainly mediated by the depth and diversity of customer knowledge development and the exploration capability. This paper shifts the research focus of balanced incremental innovation and radical innovation from enterprises to consumers, and expands the research perspective of balanced incremental innovation and radical innovation. At the end of the article, the practical significance of the research conclusions is also discussed.
