| The introduction and application of surveying engineering has deeply affected the urbanism process when Shanghai entered an era remarked with rapid development and growth after 1840s.The essay focuses on the impact surveying had on urban growth of modern Shanghai,and surveying could be considered as both technology and social phenomena.As the technology,surveying is involved in three parts:surveying of cadaster,surveying of building,and surveying of neighborhood respectively,which relates to the texture formation of urban history of Shanghai.What is more,the technology is in the status of upgrade and change in different era,and in different areas in Shanghai with different regulations and administrative systems,including British and French Concession.As the social phenomena,management of cadastral,property,construction and civil engineering corresponded to the technology of surveying engineering,and application of surveying engineering offers an easy access to urban governance by the various kinds of thematic maps,which benefits city administrator and other departments as bureaucracy of police,sanitation,electricity,etc.The essay focuses on the construction of Shikumen(a unique building style combined terrace house in London and Chinese traditional elements)since it is acknowledged that Shikumen stands for the construction of Modern Shanghai.The analysis would be divided into application of surveying engineering on three spatial dimensions:cadaster,building and LiLong(Shikumen neighborhood),and the discussion would follow to look over the impact of surveying on urbanism of Shanghai. |
