Objective:To investigate the gray/white matter volume change in the first-episode drug-naive adolescent epilepsy patients by using,voxel-based morphometry analysis, and understand the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of adolescent epilepsy for localizing the origin of epilepsy.Methods:Twenty-three cases first-episode drug-naive adolescent epilepsy patients and 23age-,sex-and education-matched healthy controls were included in our present study. All participants were performed high resolution magnetic resonance examination and all the 3DT1W structural data were analyzed based on the VBM8 and SPM8 software.Two-sample T-test was used to observe the regional cerebral gray/white matter volume abnormalities between the adolescent epilepsy patients and the healthy controls. Results:Compared with normal control, adolescent epilepsy patients showed increased gray matter volume on the right para-hippocampal gyrus, the right insula, the left superior frontal gyrus, the left occipital lobe gyrus, the left medial frontal gyrus and decreased gray matter volume on the left superior temporal gyrus. In addition, the adolescent epilepsy patients showed increased white matter volume in the left side of the brain stem, the left occipital lobe, the right middle frontal sub-gyrus,the left posterior cingulate sub-gyrus and the left cingulate sub-gyrus,no decreased white matter volume were found in our study.Conclusion:First-episode,drug-naive adolescent epilepsy has gray/white matter volume changes in multiple brain regions, these changes may be correlated with the clinical symptoms of patients and the epilepsy onset position. The result may help to provide treatment evidence to localize the origin of epilepsy in some drug refractory epilepsy.
