Charles Dickens(1812-1870),as the well-known English author,was famous for his plenty of classic masterpieces and extensive theme in English literature.His novels include all kinds of themes,such as politics,commerce and legal system,society during Victorian Era,etc.Family is one of the typical topics that Dickens tried to present to readers.His vivid depiction of family's living conditions in different social classes at that time,the personal family values in his literary works made family value a vital topic to be discussed while conducting researches on the writings of Dickens.Meanwhile,this topic lacks enough attention in previous literary studies.Therefore,the essay conducts a study on family values in Bleak House by Dickens.Firstly,this study summarizes the mind-set of Dickens and principles in terms of family matters with examples,in order to form an overall concept.Second,it will focus on Bleak House and analyze the context of the novel to find out Dickens' s ideal family values and its relation with his mind-set.Based on the foregoing analysis,this thesis summarizes from both positive and negative sides.Then,in addition to the middle-class family and moral values,the depiction of Bleak House also conveys the desire and advocacy of ideal family life and outlines an Utopian blueprint: each member plays a different role,and a harmonious home is built with mutual understanding,tolerance,so as to withstand the impact of hurricane in an unjust society,Which will be the spiritual support to eliminate and overcome darkness.Last,the part excavates the historical and practical significance of Dickens' family values by combining the context of Victorian Era,current society and the author's humanistic based on Positivism Social Statics Theory of Auguste Comte.The theme of the novel “Bleak House” seems to show a bleak and desolate scene.However,what the author tried to express is the harmonious family life.Dickens publicizes the beauty of humanity and at the same time inspires readers that althoughthe Bleak House is riddled with lawsuits,it is not equal with the desolation.The positive characters and family affection make Bleak House warmer.
