Yifei Lu,famous Chinese contemporary master of bird and flower painting, whose art has undergone an early,a middle and a late phase, demonstrates different styles in each of these phases. As Lu has created three pieces of “Nao Hong Yi Ge”,one in each phase, this essay centers on these three pieces, together with his other works of painting and calligraphy,to explore his artistic style. This essay specifically discusses in depth about his early-phase bird and flower painting in Gongbi style and Xiaokai calligraphy based on the work of Zhengming Wen and others,to his middle-phase combinaion of Gongbi and Xieyi painting style and a bolder and more skillful calligraphy style,to his late-phase free employment of both Gongbi and Xieyi painting style and mature calligraphy style. In other words, this essay explores his progression from Gongbi to Xieyi, from calligraphy to painting, then from painting to calligraphy, and finally working fluidly between styles of Gongbi and Xieyi and discuss how these different stages and their respective artistic expressions hold value for today's creation of bird and flower painting.
