This dissertation, based on positive study and close reading, demonstrates Mo Yan's acceptance and deviation of Faulkner's writing. Most of the articles abroad and home make a comparison between Faulkner and Mo Yan,while few studies on their influential relationship are carried out deeply. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on the complexity of influential relationship between them.Chapter one analyzes and expounds the characteristics of Mo Yan's novels before 1985 from the aspects of narrative perspective, narrative structure, language style and spiritual expression, making a comparison with the transformation of Mo Yan's writing in Chapter two.During this period, the keynote of Mo Yan's novels is realistic, and most of them present the stories with omniscient perspective, traditional spatial and temporal order, expressing the spiritual pursue of truth, goodness and beauty.Since 1985,Mo Yan's writings have entered a period of transformation, and the representative work is Dry River.Hence, the comparative study between Dry River and The Sound and the Fury,on the five aspects of narrative perspective, narrative structure, symbolic images, theme of death, and rhetoric of synesthesia, becomes the main content of chapter two.Mo Yan involves Faulkner's artistic techniques in his writing in the first four aspects, but he does not achieve the same artistic effect of entirety as Faulkner. While synaethesia shows not only Mo Yan's acceptance of Faulkner's writing techniques, but also his inheritance of Chinese traditional lyric literature.Chapter three focuses on analyzing Mo Yan's novels written during the middle and late period to elucidate the subtle relation between Mo Yan's intentional deviation and unconscious acceptance of Faulkner.Mo Yan tries to reject Faulkner's influence subjectively, but he fails to get rid of it completely.Consequently, western modernist techniques are often embellished in Chinese traditional narrative style and storytelling style in Death by Sandalwood,Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and others works. In a word,Mo Yan doesn't integrate Faulkner's essence into his own works during his early acceptance of Faulkner's style, while he just imitates Faulkner's writing skills in form, thus his acceptance is “deviant”.During the middle and late period,Mo Yan intends to get rid of Faulkner's influence, but he can only repeat the original "Native Writing" while returning to the traditional Chinese narrative style as a result of failing to comprehend the "Modernity" reflection behind these techniques. On the one hand, the "local experience" cannot be promoted, and on the other hand, the narrative skills of Faulkner have been gradually adopted for a long time. Therefore, some of Mo Yan's middle and late novels reflect "acceptance" deviation and the return of "retrogression".
