The novel The Known World is the representative work of Edward ·P ·Jones who is a famous American contemporary black writer.Jones is an "old age" new show in the American literary world in the early twenty-first century. His life was full of poverty and frustrations.Until middle age,he realized his magnificent turn life by relying on few literary works.Jones' s novel has certain background and foundation. The environment for the prosperity and development of African American literature,Wright and other writers brought him literary enlightenment, his own rough life experience and difficult life experience had given him the opportunity to create such a classic.Although Jones was at the bottom of the society,he reflected the African American culture from the bottom, but his vision is broad and lofty. He can examine and reflect the African American culture from the perspective of the whole American society. In his works,we can always experience the height of intelligence and the thickness of thought. The Known World, was based on the slavery system in the south of the United States and used Manchester County as the site of the story to describe a short but bizarre life of a black slave owner. At the same time,he also drew an unknown history ——there were a few black slave owners in the southern part of the United States. The novel The Known World has profound and unique charm.First of all,the novel has a profound ideological theme, which was reflected in the reappearance of American history and culture in a broad field of vision. From the perspective of a slave-owner,Jones demonstrated the complexity of slavery system, the exploration process of black culture self-identity and the interrogation and reflection of human nature in a calm and objective tone. The novel does not directly attack the slavery system and racial discrimination, but objectively reveals the complexity of slavery: there were white slave owners and black slave owners.Under this system, the characters in the novel are more thought-provoking to the success or failure of the self-identity construction of the black culture. At the same time, the novel does not deliberately criticize and praise someone, but really shows the complexity of human nature, and reproduces the goodness and evil of human nature. As an ordinary person, whether black or white, they have their own beauty and ugliness.Secondly, the novel has created a series of complex rich characters.Among the female images, there are a slave wife who bravely assumed responsibility,an aspiring independent black female teacher,a sober and free-spirited "mad woman",a greedy and vicious wife image, and a kind and loving woman slave. In the male, there are a pathetic hateful slave overseer,a black slave owner who have lost himself,a white slave owner who was emotionally entangled, white poor people who has kind sympathy for black people, and a white magistrate who has faith but cannot save themselves through faith. These characters grew up,redeemed, lost, and tragedy in their own stories, which together constituted a picture of life in the complex slavery system in Manchester county.Third, the novel has great artistic achievement, which is embodied in the pursuit of imagination and reality. The perfect integration of historical reality and text fiction,as if in a real society;the fragmented plot combination, and multi-angle,multi-cues,multi-level narrative techniques make the novel full of picture;the use of time and space to reverse jumping skills to break the boundaries of the present, the past and the future, add the novelty and richness of the novel;the use of symbols, metaphors, and cynicism, and the depiction of surreal and supernatural scenes add to the mystery and charm of the novel.Fourth, the novel has deep spiritual significance and enlightening value, reflected in three points: leading the world to face slavery and race problems, the sequelae of slavery and race still exist, this requires white people and blacks to reflect on themselves. The author intends to recall that period of history and restore the past,it reveals that the world must look squarely at history and recollect the past in order to live better.Whether it is in the period of slavery or reality, love is the best cure for the disease,so we should break through the haze with love.
