As an important medium of communication culture,TV dramas can not only show the social culture and image of a period,but also show the cultural changes of the country and society.There is no unchanging culture in the world,and the process of modernization is the main factor of social and cultural change.This paper aims at sorting out the characteristics and changes of British society from the 1980s to the present,and makes an in-depth analysis of British society and culture to discuss the changes of British social culture.For more than a century,the role of the world's famous character Sherlock Holmes and his story is still sought after by the readers and audiences around the world,and has maintained a lasting appeal.In recent years,the UK has achieved great success in promoting its own culture and image,which is of great value in the academic investigation of relevant fields.This article for more than one hundred years of the most popular two by Sherlock Holmes novel series:the complete works of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock as the research object,the hope can through longitudinal comparison,obtaining social culture changes.In the second to five chapter,this article selects the character symbol,sex symbol and implements symbol of three kinds of the typical symbol,on the basis of the theory of semiotics,carries on the signifier and the signified the first system analysis.In the sixth chapter,by combining with the background of the period of TV drama creation,the second level of the symbol can be defined and interpreted.It has been found that since 1980,the historical track of British society and the symbol vicissitudes of British TV series are basically coincident.In promoting the thatcher period of Victorian values,for Granada Television completely and faithfully restored Conan Doyle live in Victorian society style,shows a attaches great importance to the authority,rational and the patriarchal society.The BBC has created a modern version of the Sherlock Holmes story,inspired by the connotation of "cool Britain",which is presented to the audience by a multi-cultural society with a sense of technology and innovation.Despite more than 100 years of history,Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most recognizable and iconic symbols of British culture.The story of Sherlock Holmes has been stamped with many times in the process of reinvention.In this changing environment,we need to properly examine the development path of social modernization and objectively evaluate the role of TV dramas and other media products in spreading and promoting social culture.
