The novel The Bell Jar focuses on American women in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century. It truly represents the living conditions of American women at that time.Thesis combines Plath's autobiographical writing, uses the theory of feminism to analyze the writing of the female world in her novel, explores the subjectivity of the female protagonist in the process of growth, and displays the unique skills of Plath's construction of the female world.Plath projects her female experience to the hero Esther of The Bell Jar,to display her life difficulties, including her inseparable loneliness, contradictions to motherhood identity, and the ups and downs of artistic pursuits. In reality,Plath can not escape kinds of predicament and can only end with death. But in the novel The Bell Jar,she uses the fictional character Esther to complete the search for women's subjective growth. In the novel,Esther,by observing and analyzing the surrounding women, denies the women confined to the traditional family, women who are excessively pursuing career development, and materialized women, and points out that they are essentially other people who have internalized the male value system. In the face of male manipulation,Esther has achieved rebellion against the dominant male by restoring the women's right to speak, breaking the male subject's expectation and fantasies towards women, and braving about male authority.Esther try to construct the subjective identity of a woman by writing. She realizes the deceptive nature of the motherhood myth, boldly abandons her virginity, rejects her motherhood, and denys continuation of maternal pedigree, which reflects her awakening of her feminine consciousness. The Bell Jar has distinctive features of art.Plath uses confession narratives, animal metaphors, and a three-dimensional narrative space to vividly describe the living conditions of American women in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century and truly demonstrates the true ideas of female hearts. To a degree, they also reflect the awakening of Plath's female consciousness. As a member of the Western women intellectuals in the middle of the 20th century,on the one hand Plath was influenced by traditional patriarchal concepts, and on the other she was eager to be independent and to become an outstanding poet. She got into trouble in the heavy attack of reality and ideals. In the novel The Bell Jar,Plath reflects on personal life, explores the spiritual growth of women and the value of women's existence, reveals the acquisition of subjectivity in the process of women's growth, and has practical significance.
