The history of a school records the development of a school. The translation of the history of universities has become an important way for external exchanges and cooperation. This article takes the form of a practical report. The text chosen is the article called Suihua University: A History(From August 2003 to December 2012)edited by Professor Mo Haiping. The translator encounters the following difficulties in translation: the translation of school mottos in school history, the translation of subjectless sentences in Chinese, and how to ensure the coherence of the translation of external publicity texts.By analyzing and summarizing cases, three principles should be adhered to in the translation of school mottos;that strategies, such as supplementing the subjects, using the sentence pattern of “it be” and “there be” in English, and changing the active voice into passive voice,be used to translate a large number of Chinese sentences without subjects;and that non-structural cohesion and structural cohesion be employed to deliver coherent translation for foreign publicity purpose. It attempts to set an example for the translation of this kind of text and the translator also hopes that this translation practice will help more foreign readers to have a deeper understanding of Suihua University in order to enhance its international influence.
