English learning beliefs have influence on learning behaviors. Therefore,it is significant to study Chinese EFL learners' beliefs about English learning and the relationship between beliefs and English learning achievements. This research adopts questionnaire and semi-structured interview and is conducted among sophomores in Tianjin Polytechnic University through a modified version of"Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory"proposed by Horwitz. It attempts to explore the current tendency of English learning beliefs held by EFL learners, the relationship between EFL learners' beliefs on English learning and English achievements, and the significant differences in EFL learners, beliefs between higher achievement and lower achievement groups. All the collected data are put into SPSS 17.0 for analysis. The findings show that learners are generally confident and can recognize the important role of learning and communication strategies;they have more instrumental motivation than integrative motivation and they have misconception on difficulty of English learning and lack of self-autonomy;as for the correlations, beliefs about learning and communication strategies, integrative motivation are positively related to the learning achievements whereas beliefs about external factors are negatively related to the learning achievements;there are significant differences between higher achievement and lower achievement groups in beliefs about learning and communication strategies, integrative motivation and beliefs about external factors.
