A Study Of Translation Confidence In Lin Yutang's English Works

As a renowned and erudite scholar,Lin Yutang displayed a great confidence in translation,which,embodied Chinese elements in lexical,syntactic and discourse level,is of considerable realistic significance in the new era.It has been verified that,during the trans-cultural communication of Chinese culture,both the characteristics of culture and language should be revealed here.It is not only an appropriate and inevitable road for the dissemination of national culture but also determined by the indivisibility of culture and language.Therefore,Lin's English writing is a bold cross-cultural attempt that stands test even in contemporary time.It's of great importance for people to take a rational view on the so-called idiomatic English and their own local characteristics,and then to achieve a balance between studying from Western world and narrating Chinese story.This paper first explores the origin of Lin's confidence in translation,and then analyzes the concrete manifestation of his confidence in translation from different aspects of words,sentences and texts.In terms of words,this paper introduces Lin's three methods of lexical translation that demonstrate his confidence in translation,including transliteration,neology and coinage;in the aspect of sentences,Lin resorted to "stupid translation" to reveal the charm of Chinese language and employed quite a number of typical Chinese sentences in his English writings,such as running sentences,contracted sentences,parallel sentences and reiterative locution,etc;as regards the textual level,this thesis interprets Chinese textual features to which Lin attached great importance in his English writings,of which the most prominent are flowing text promotion mode,repetition,implicit discourse connection and the emphasis on "qi"(?).Thirdly,this paper illustrates the inevitability and rationality of Lin's confidence in translation from multiple dimensions of Linguistic Worldview,Defamiliarization,Reception Aesthetics and Pure Language.Finally it,drawing from Lin's English writing practice,expounds the dialectical relationship between culture,language and translation,and highlights the meaning of confidence in all three so as to better shoulder the mission of cultural communication in the new era and present a more confident and open China in front of foreign spectators.
